MSU Turf Team Update: Melt, Freeze, and the Michigan Turfgrass Conference
The warm temperatures at the end of last week and over the weekend melted most of the snow that was in place throughout much of Michigan and the continued warm temperatures into Saturday should have helped avoid ice formation. However, by Sunday, Saturday's high temperature of 58 at the turf center had transitioned to a low of 25 and today temperatures are hovering near 20. Whether or not this type of temperature transition either with or without ice formation is a recipe for severe winterkill is always a little uncertain. One thing I do know is at least this winter we've had some ice form on our winterkill microplots (see pictures). On Friday, water was filling the buckets, by this morning we have ice.
