Former Michigan Superintendent Jon D. Maddern to head Golf Operations

Mayor Jerry Sanders today announced the appointment of Mr. Jon Maddern as the City’s new Golf Operations Manager/Deputy Director of the Golf Division in the Park and Recreation Department.

Mr. Maddern will begin working in his new position on June 28, 2008. Maddern replaces former Deputy Director Mark Woodward who has taken a position in private industry in Lawrence, Kansas.  As Deputy Director, Maddern will manage the Golf Division of the City’s Park and Recreation
Department, including day to day operations of the Balboa Park, Mission Bay and Torrey Pines golf facilities as well as coordinating and directing major tournaments such as the annual PGA sponsored Buick Invitational held at the Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Maddern joined the City in 2007 as the Assistant Deputy Director for the Golf Division in the Park and Recreation Department and has assisted in the daily operations of the Division as well as playing a key role in the City’s preparation and assistance to the United States Golf Association’s U.S. Open which ended yesterday at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Maddern brings more than 28 years of experience in the golf industry to the position, including more than 17 years managing golf courses in California and Michigan. He is a Certified Golf Course Superintendent by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and has a Certificate in
Turfgrass Management from Michigan State University.       

There are no immediate plans for filling the Assistant Golf Deputy Division vacancy left by Maddern’s promotion.
