Since 2018, the season-long match play championship has been contested by members of the MiGCSA. Now in its eighth year, the tournament once again featured a full bracket of 64 members, making up 32 two-person teams. They played 62 matches across the entire state from May to October.
This year's final four saw the team of Eric Davey & Scott Rettmann (East Bracket) prevail 2&1 over Jim Bluck, CGCS & Dan Lucas (North Bracket). In the other semi-final, Dr. Kevin Frank & Carey Mitchelson (East Bracket) defeated Jay Eccleton, CGCS & Marc McCoy (West Bracket) 4&2.
The Championship Match was played on October 8th at Franklin Hills Country Club, hosted by Golf Course Superintendent Brian Schweihofer.
The match began with a quick two-up lead for Frank & Mitchelson through five holes, but by the 11th tee, the match was back to even. Davey & Rettmann then took their first lead of the day on Hole #11 when Rettmann's 5 net 4 secured the win. A bogey 4 by Dr. Frank on the treacherous 198-yard par-three 14th evened the match again. On the very next hole, however, Davey's lone par on the 435-yard hole gave them the one-up advantage.
They held that narrow lead until the 17th hole, where Frank & Mitchelson pair of pars beat the double bogey 6's by Davey & Rettmann. After tying the 18th hole and the 1st extra hole, the match moved to Hole #2.
There, Rettmann hit his tee shot OB which led to him picking up. With Mitchelson also picking up, the hole came down to a par putt showdown between Davey and Frank. Dr. Frank missed his long par putt, but Eric Davey drained his ten-footer to win the hole, the match, and the 2025 Match Play Championship!
