Wequetonsing Golf Club was founded in 1896. The 18 hole course offers a classic and timeless design that has remained virtually unchanged since the 1920’s. Today’s layout was designed by James & Robert Foulis. James being the winner of the 2nd U.S. Open in 1896. The club is located in Harbor Springs, Michigan situated in the Northern Lower Peninsula approximately a quarter mile from the Lake Michigan shore. The 150 acre property is composed of bent/poa greens, tees, and fairways featuring abundant wildlife with hardwood stands and vistas of Lake Michigan. The walkable layout is complimented with a popular caddie program.
The golf course maintenance teams at Gulf Stream Golf Club and Wequetonsing Golf Club have partnered to create a unique and invaluable job experience. The right candidate will gain experience on a wide variety of playing surfaces.
Gulf Stream Golf Club is located in Delray Beach, FL and was originally designed by Donald J. Ross and opened in 1924. The golf club sits directly between the Atlantic Ocean and the intracoastal waterway. Wequetonsing Golf Club is designed by Robert and James Foulis, established in 1896, and is located in Harbor Springs, MI in close proximity to Lake Michigan.
There are very few opportunities that provide both warm season and cool season agronomic experience all wrapped into one package. The goal of the program is to provide potential candidates with a variety of experiences through on the job training. This offering is intended for recent graduates from a turf related program.
The first leg of experience will begin at Gulf Stream GC where the candidate will work through the heart of the golf season in South Florida at one of the most prestigious clubs in the area. Experience will be gained on in-season preparations and cultural practices for a variety bermuda turf. Additionally, there will be opportunities to gain experience with HDPE and PVC piping along with Toro Lynx central irrigation control. There will be opportunities to operate some of the latest turf equipment along with tournament planning, and course setup. This portion of the experience is designed to be a 6-month long opportunity and would run from mid-October through mid-April.
The second leg will take place at Wequetonsing GC where the candidate will experience a full season of cool season turfgrass management at a renowned club in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan. The candidate will gain knowledge in Spring course preparations, mid-season management practices, Fall conditioning and Winter preparations on acreage comprised of mixed cool season turfgrass species. The candidate will have a key role within our team and be exposed to a great variety of responsibilities including fertility applications, hydraulic irrigation system programming and repair, small project planning and execution, and tournament preparation. Seasonal goals will be discussed with the individual upon the start of the term which will determine the emphasis of the experience. This portion will begin in mid/late April and carry through mid-October.
The candidates performance will determine the term length within the program.
This offering is intended for recent graduates from a turf related program. Other candidates will be considered.
The selected candidate will be compensated with an hourly wage that will include housing, uniforms, and playing privileges.
